SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Seniors struggling with low-income and homelessness now have a new affordable housing option in San Ysidro.

Sometime next month, a hundred seniors with low-income status will be moving into the new Ventana al Sur. It is a new development located in the San Ysidro Historic Village District close to where the 5 and 805 freeways intersect near the U.S.-Mexico Border. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held last Thursday, announcing the construction of the development.

Ventana al Sur is a four-story building comprised of 100 one- and two-bedroom rental apartments, including 25 for seniors who experienced homelessness.

The units are intended for seniors with income ranging from 20% to 50% of the area median income, which is from $21,200 to $53,050 per year for a one-person household, according to the SDHC.

The apartments were developed as a collaboration between the Metropolitan Advisory Committee on Anti-Poverty of San Diego County and Kingdom Development. The San Diego Housing Commission awarded 25 rental vouchers to help pay for the units intended for seniors who previously experienced homelessness.

Various funding sources contributed to Ventana al Sur’s development including $4.4 million from SDHC, $5 million from the city of San Diego’s “ Bridge to Home ” program and around $50.4 million from state housing programs.

According to the SDHC, the residents who live at Ventana al Sur will receive on-site supportive services like case management, life skills and access to mental health services.
