SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A traffic accident at a busy intersection in Hillcrest left a motorcycle rider with serious injuries on Wednesday, authorities said.

The collision occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. when the driver of a black 2016 GMC Sierra truck, a 48-year-old man, was traveling westbound on the 300 block of Washington Street, the San Diego Police Department explained.

As the driver went to turn left onto 3rd Avenue, a 26-year-old man riding a 2010 Aprilia RSV4 sport motorcycle also approached the intersection eastbound on Washington Street. Police said the truck entered the intersection facing a green traffic light.

After a break in the eastbound traffic, the truck turned left onto southbound 3rd Avenue. At that same time, the motorcyclist unsafely passed vehicles along the right shoulder and entered the intersection while also facing a green traffic light, the department explained.

As the motorcycle entered the intersection, it collided with the truck in a broadside collision. Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene and provided medical attention to the motorcycle rider, who sustained a skull fracture and a brain bleed.

Authorities confirmed that driving under the influence was not a factor in this incident. The investigation is ongoing and officials are urging witnesses to come forward with any additional information. Calls can be made to Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
