CALEXICO, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — More than 646 pounds of methamphetamine were discovered hidden in a shipment of green onions last week, according to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection on Friday.

CBP officers said the drugs were seized on Oct. 10 after they stopped a 63-year-old man driving a commercial tractor trailer and attempting to cross through the Calexico Port of Entry.

The commercial tractor-trailer was carrying a shipment manifested for green onions, the release stated. After a secondary inspection, a CBP K-9 unit screened the shipment and prompted officers to conduct a closer examination of the trailer.

Officers found 608 packages hidden within the shipment of green onions after they physically examined the tractor-trailer’s floor, the release said. The contents of the packages tested positive for methamphetamine, weighing more than 646 pounds and estimated to cost a street value of about $775,000, according to CBP.

CBP officers seized the drugs and tractor-trailer while the driver was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations, the release stated.
