HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) — Henderson is home to the nation’s best cursive writer.

The New American Cursive Penmanship Program said Levi McCamish has the best cursive handwriting of any first-grade boy in the country.

In the classroom, the six-year-old is described as creative, witty, smart and artistic. Levi’s mom believes cursive is a form of art, so it’s no surprise he’s so good at his favorite subject.

Tiffany McCamish said applying to the New American Cursive’s National Handwriting Competition required no convincing for her first grader.

Can people claim their lottery prizes anonymously?

“We did about half of the Pledge of Allegiance one day, and then the next day we completed it. So, it took him about two days, and we feel he really gave his best work,” says his mother.

The first grader’s handwriting was compared to every first-grade boy in the nation. McCamish says he has his mom, grandma, and one other special person to thank for his talents.

“God made me a cursive writer, ” says McCammish.

He says he produces his best work by following the three P’s: posture, practice, and paper tilt. The first grader says it is important to keep your head off the table to avoid sloppy handwriting.

The Director of Arrow Classical, the hybrid home school program McCamish attends, says students learn the skill as part of their curriculum.

“The benefits of cursive abound, ranging from improving neural connections in the brain, promoting a strong sense of self-discipline, and helping to develop crucial fine motor skills,” says Carley Coursey.

All Kentucky elementary students will have the opportunity to experience those benefits. The General Assembly passed a law requiring a cursive writing class in all Kentucky elementary schools, beginning in 2025.
