MOREHEAD, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — For the second year in a row, the Kentucky Teacher of the Year is both a graduate of Morehead State University (MSU) and an educator with the Rowan County school district.

Allison Slone, a special education teacher at Rowan County Senior High School (RCSHS), has been awarded the Kentucky Teacher of the Year Award by the Kentucky Education Association (KEA).

Slone said she “fell in love” with teachers and students during her senior year at Knott County High School. Slone added that Dr. Wayne Willis, Professor Emeritus of Education at MSU, “lit a fire under me,” motivating her to apply for the Teacher Education Program.

Slone said her approach to learning is that “my students and I are learning together.”

According to the KEA, this is the second year in a row that a Rowan County School District educator has won the honor of Teacher of the Year, which Slone said does not strike her as a coincidence.

“I truly believe we have some of the best teachers in this entire state,” Slone remarked, “but I also believe that’s because the biggest majority of us received our education at Morehead State University.”
