Louisville police shoot man trying to carjack woman in Walmart pharmacy drive-thru

LOUISVILLE, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — A man was shot by a Louisville Metro police officer after a chase, crash, and attempted carjacking on Wednesday.

It started at 12:15 p.m. when a Kentucky State Police trooper was involved in a chase that ended in a crash on the outer loop of New Cut Road. According to the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD), one man was arrested at the scene of the crash but another armed man fled toward Walmart.

Interim Chief Paul Humphrey said in a press conference that the suspect was located inside the store before fleeing again. The man then allegedly attempted to carjack a woman in the pharmacy drive-thru. To stop the suspect, an LMPD officer shot the man multiple times.

Humphrey said that he was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“We are very grateful that nobody else was injured in this incident. We’re talking about an armed suspect running from police in the middle of the afternoon, running through a crowd at Walmart,” Humphrey said. “What this did to this victim, who was just minding her business trying to pick up a prescription at the Walmart pharmacy when an armed man jumps in her passenger seat.”

LMPD said that body camera footage will be released in 10 business days, and the officer will be placed on paid reassignment as protocol.

“We’re very proud of the actions this officer took to save this woman’s life today,” Humphrey said. “This type of behavior will not be tolerated, plain and simple.”

According to authorities, two guns were recovered at the scene and the victim was uninjured.
