LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) issued a warning on Thursday regarding counterfeit and movie prop money circulating in the Laurel County area.

According to the sheriff’s office, businesses around the Laurel County area have reported that counterfeit and movie prop cash has been showing up in different amounts. $20 bills “appear to be the most popular counterfeited bills in our area,” authorities said.

Law enforcement has outlined some key differences to help the public detect counterfeit or movie prop bills from the real thing:

    • Counterfeit paper is thinner than real money with a different texture
    • Counterfeit bills do not have the blue and red threads intertwined in the paper
    • Movie money bills have text saying “motion picture use,” or “movie prop use only” where the United States of America normally is, and on the back says “In Prop We Trust” instead of “In God We Trust.”
    • Counterfeit bills in 20, 50, and 100 dollar amounts do not have the security strip embedded in the paper

The LCSO said deputies are asking for the public to report counterfeit money to the sheriff’s office or their local law enforcement agency.
