FRANKFORT, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) has shed light on its protocols following a bus crash that left a 15-year-old George Rogers Clark High School student dead.

When Kentucky school buses are involved in fatal accidents, a KDE spokesperson said there are certain policies to follow.

When a bus accident occurs that results in serious injury or a fatality, school districts immediately notify the KDE Pupil Transportation Branch. Following these reports, KDE collects driver training and bus maintenance records from the past 12 months for the driver and bus involved in the accident. If KDE finds a common cause between accidents throughout the state, KDE will utilize this information to provide communication and/or future training statewide. KDE does not have any role in the investigation(s) performed by police.
