LOUISVILLE, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — Law enforcement branches of the East and West Coast are mourning the loss of a former Deputy Chief of the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD).

The Phoenix Police Department posted on Facebook Friday that Officer Zane Coolidge passed away following a shooting in the area on Tuesday.

According to the Phoenix Police Foundation, officers were dispatched shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in response to a call about a burglary. As officers arrived on the scene and attempted to talk to the alleged burglar, he ran away.

“During the chase, the suspect opened fire, striking both officers,” the Phoenix Police Foundation said in a news release.

“Since Tuesday night’s shooting, Officer Coolidge put up a valiant fight, despite the odds being against him. He has been surrounded by loved ones and blanketed in the prayers of this community. The injuries he sustained after the cowardly acts of another were just too much for him to overcome. Officer Coolidge’s legacy will forever be a part of this Department,” Phoenix police said in a news release.
