118 year old time capsule found in Elizabethtown wall

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — A piece of history was recently uncovered in Hardin County.

It went unnoticed for over a century, according to the Hardin County Chamber of Commerce, until renovations began.

A contractor was working on a wall when he noticed pieces of glass inside and he decided to remove a few more bricks to uncover what was hidden. Inside was a broken glass time capsule, dating back to July 12, 1906, per officials.

Over a century ago, the jar filled with small pieces of history was placed inside the walls of what would become the new city hall building. Fast forward 118 years, the building is home to the Chamber of Commerce, according to a news release.

Inside Hardin County officials found a Kentucky postcard featuring Abraham Lincoln, a list of people involved with the construction, two copies of the newspaper, and tickets to the Elizabethtown fair in 1906.

“There were many interesting stories in the newspapers including a feature on the building that the time capsule was placed in, an article about a ‘fine, good looking boy baby’ who was available for adoption from the Children’s Home,” a news release said.

Mayor Jeff Gregory even located a mention of his great-great-grandfather in one of the newspaper articles included, per a news release.

The Chamber of Commerce said that it plans to involve area historians to document and preserve the newfound pieces of Elizabethtown history.
