Barbourville, KY (FOX 56) — Schools in the area have been navigating unusual circumstances as the search for Joseph Couch continues.

Canceling classes across districts is something some administrators said they deem necessary to keep students and staff safe.

Barbourville Independent Schools superintendent Dennis Messer emphasized the unpredictable nature of current events and the importance of preparedness. “In today’s world, it’s ever-changing, and it’s too often these events are happening. This has happened in our community and with our neighboring county, so we practice for this.”

According to Messer, students in Barbourville Independent Schools have not been in the classroom this week. However, remote learning was utilized on Tuesday and Wednesday through ENTI days, which are typically reserved for weather-related closures.

“We have utilized two ENTI days, which is basically virtual learning. We usually use those during weather-related events, but we have used them with our students this week. Our teachers have been in contact with students throughout the process,” Messer said.

Messer stated that he and other district leaders have been in constant communication with local law enforcement about the status of the manhunt, and decisions are made based on what is deemed best for students and staff.

“I feel like with three days off, schools will have to return to normal. We believe we’ve got a plan in place to ensure that when our kids come, they’ll be safe here and on our campus,” Messer said.

Barbourville Independent Schools plan to resume in-person classes tomorrow, with additional security measures to be implemented. Messer said, “We’re going to have some extra police presence on campus tomorrow. We’ve been in contact with local officials, and they’ve agreed to do additional patrols around campus throughout the day. We’ll stick to our safety protocols and make sure that the campus is locked down and safe for our students. We look forward to seeing smiling faces in the morning and getting back to some sense of normalcy.”

Other schools in the region are also adjusting their schedules. Rockcastle County Schools resumed classes on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, with enhanced safety protocols in place. A statement from the district read, “Rockcastle County Schools will reopen with enhanced safety protocols in place following close coordination with local and state law enforcement. We are committed to ensuring a safe return for all.”

In contrast, Corbin Independent Schools have decided to remain closed for the remainder of the week.
