    Rowan County residents alerted after Viking Hill schools enter ‘soft lockdown’

    ROWAN COUNTY, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — Rowan County Schools have lifted its “soft lockdown” for Viking Hill schools on Thursday.

    Just after 12:20 p.m. on Thursday, Rowan County Schools posted on Facebook that the soft lockdown has been lifted for McBrayer Elementary, Rowan County Preschool, Rowan Academy, Rowan County Middle School, and Rowan County Senior High School.

    The lockdown was reportedly implemented following a “possible” threat at Rowan County Middle School that leaders had been made aware of, according to district leaders.

    “Our school resource officers, Rowan County Sheriff’s Department, Morehead City Police, Kentucky State Police, and school administration promptly conducted a thorough investigation, and no credible threats have been identified,” Rowan County Schools said.

    While the soft lockdown has reportedly been lifted, district leaders said that law enforcement will have an increased presence at Viking Hill schools throughout Thursday, with “additional safety measures in place,” per Rowan County Schools.

    District leaders added a note in the Facebook post to parents and students about non-credible threats to a school, listing the potential consequences for such threats.

    Rowan County Schools said:

    Such threats to our students and school staff are totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Please know that Rowan County Schools will pursue immediate legal charges for felony terroristic threatening in the second degree, to the absolute fullest extent of the law, against anyone who makes such threats, including students. Moreover, we will advocate to our highest ability that the prosecution of these individuals be swift and their punishment be severe.

    Rowan County Schools posted on Facebook just after 11:15 a.m. on Thursday that Viking Hill schools “are currently in a soft lockdown.”

    The following schools are currently operating on a soft lockdown in Rowan County, per district leaders:

    • McBrayer Elementary
    • Rowan County Preschool
    • Rowan Academy
    • Rowan County Middle School
    • Rowan County Senior High School

    “Everyone is safe, but for precautionary reasons, the school buildings are secured. Classes and routines are continuing as normal during this time,” Rowan County Schools said in the Facebook post, “During a soft lock down the perimeter doors locked; law enforcement monitors campus; no persons allowed to enter; and students/staff remain in the building.”

    Rowan County Schools said that while law enforcement investigates, district leaders are “taking every precaution to ensure the safety of our students and staff,” and asked that parents stay calm and wait for official updates from the school district.
