HAZARD, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — A joint meeting was held on Thursday to touch base with schools in the Hazard area, to inform school leaders to help them decide on the safety of reopening schools from Wednesday’s incident at Exit 59.

The meeting consisted of law enforcement from Hazard, the Kentucky State Police Department (KSP), and the Superintendent of Perry County Schools.

The meeting came after an investigation by Hazard police on Wednesday regarding an incident at Exit 59, per the Perry County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office posted on Facebook Thursday that the information Hazard police gave deputies “is that they do not believe that a shot fired struck the vehicle directly. There was what appeared to be a bullet found on the hood of the car around the bottom of the windshield wipers. There was a crack in the windshield that did not penetrate the glass or consistent with gunfire.”

According to law enforcement, ballistic experts analyzed windshield damage to a vehicle which was followed by a loud noise while driving on the highway Wednesday. “The round appeared to be weathered and not consistent with a fresh fired round that would have struck a windshield,” the PCSO said.

    LATEST KENTUCKY NEWS:

The Hazard Police Department is reportedly in the process of sending the bullet found at the scene to a KSP lab for examination and the results of that analysis will be official, per Perry County law enforcement.

Law enforcement said that the bullet that was found near the vehicle’s windshield was possibly road debris or from another origin.

Corey Elam contributed to this story.
