KENTUCKY ( FOX 56 ) — Kentuckians cast their eyes to the skies, as the second of four consecutive super moons could be one for the ages.

The September full moon is known as the “Harvest Moon,” according to the Farmer’s Almanac, and, spoiler alert, it will be a super moon.

Native American, Colonial American, and European sources each lend their stories to naming each month’s full moon, but the harvest moon’s name dances to the beat of its own drum.

The Farmer’s Almanac states that the harvest moon isn’t always in September. Whichever full moon falls closest to the autumnal equinox is named the harvest moon. In other words, if October’s full moon falls closer to the start of fall than September’s, it is known as the harvest moon, while September’s moon reverts to the “corn moon.”

    LATEST KENTUCKY NEWS:

The harvest moon rises right around sunset for multiple nights in a row and lends its light to the farmers, allowing them extra light to finish their harvest before fall frosts.

According to NASA, not only will the harvest moon be a supermoon, but it will also feature a partial lunar eclipse .

The full moon will peak at 10:35 p.m. ET on Tuesday, but the moon will begin entering the Earth’s partial shadow at 8:41 p.m. By 10:13 p.m., a small “bite” will start to appear along the top edge of the moon and the eclipse will peak by 10:44 p.m.
