LEXINGTON, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — A new study from the University of Louisville highlights the economic impact of Keeneland.

Researchers at the university’s Departments of Equine Administration and Economics said the track generated an estimated $1.6 billion each year for Fayette and surrounding counties.

Thoroughbred sales alone brought in around $1.2 billion annually, while the fall and spring races generated about $300 million.

The department said that beyond horse racing and sales, an additional $152,000 in spending in the Lexington area comes from Keeneland’s use as a destination wedding venue, corporate event space, fundraiser venue, or for other events year-round.
