LEXINGTON, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — The results are out of the starting gate for Keeneland’s economic impact last year, and the figures are impressive.

A study with Keeneland and the University of Louisville’s Department of Equine Administration and Economics found that the track brought $1.6 billion into Fayette and surrounding counties in 2023.

Why are Kentucky flags at half-staff on Saturday?

“We’re welcoming guests from all over the world. it extends far beyond the gates of Keeneland. And clearly the bluegrass region is doing a terrific job and that’s reflected in those numbers,” says Christa Marrillia, Keeneland Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer.

Most of that money comes from Keeneland’s thoroughbred auctions ($1.16 billion), along with the spring and fall meet ($300 million), business lines ($97.7 million), and new construction (166.6 million).

“I think everyone here in Central Kentucky knows that when racing and sales are happening, the entire community comes to life,” said Marrillia.

The study also found that 64% of Keeneland racing fans come from outside Kentucky. Debbi Shiffman, for instance, came to visit from Illinois.

“When I look around and I see the people that are, I suppose my peers, and enjoying the weather, the community and the horses, it’s an enjoyment. It is joy,” said Shiffman.

As the fall meet continues, Keeneland’s future looks promising. Track officials expect the total economic impact, already exceeding one billion dollars, will only continue to grow.

Marrillia said, “A great testament of how optimistic we are about the future is right behind me. The growth is happening in the construction of our new paddock building that’s going to impact all of our business lines.”

Attorney representing former Letcher County sheriff says the shooting wasn’t planned: ‘We don’t have the full story’

The new building will be able to accommodate even more fans on race day and provide new experiences for the auctions.

Construction on the new Paddock building is set to be completed by the fall of 2025.
