LEXINGTON, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — A heated debate surrounding Amendment 2 ended in a unanimous vote from the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) that the board supported using state dollars exclusively to fund the public school system.
Commissioner of the department, Robbie Fletcher, said: “So when we talk about public funding, you know, our goal was to be able to offer the absolute best product that we can to all the students across the Commonwealth in our public schools.”
Erasing the stigma around mental illness step by step during ‘NAMI Walks’ in Lexington “I think the approach of the Board of Education was spot on in looking at the focus for, looking at public dollars should be for public education. And I think that we have a responsibility to make those types of comments and take the lead on that because we have so many of our districts are looking to us for leadership,” said Fletcher.
The board came to a resolution after last week’s meeting that if they don’t address this issue, they’re talking very loudly by staying quiet, and that the board has a responsibility to advocate for Kentucky’s public schools.
“So I’m learning there’s going to be a lot of things that we’re going to disagree on. But we don’t have to be disagreeable as we can sit down and talk. We can have those conversations. Now I’m going to be very passionate about the issues, but I’m going to do that in a way that, you know, I want that legislator to hear me one on one, have those type of conversations,” said Fletcher.
Fletcher told FOX 56 he’s in favor of keeping public funding in public schools.

“So again, for me, I’ll vote no. And the reason for that is I don’t understand. I don’t see where we’re going with funding.I don’t see the parameters there. I don’t see how it impacts accountability. Does that mean that all schools are going to be accountable to the same system? And of course, at the end, are all students really going to be served? “
With this topic being a major part of the ballot, the KDE is encouraging those to read through the amendment, making sure Kentuckians understand what they’re voting for.
