KENTUCKY ( FOX 56 ) — Something seems “fishy” with Kentucky’s favorite top candy choices, and that doesn’t even feel like that “hot” of a take.

Kentuckians should give these treats to children this Halloween to help them avoid being tricked, according to 2024 research done by CandyStore.com .

After tracking years worth of bulk candy orders, especially around Halloween time, the online candy ordering store said that Kentucky’s favorite candies at Halloween, in pounds purchased, are:

    • Reese’s Cups: 70,644
    • Hot Tamales: 57,953
    • Swedish Fish: 40,252

How does Kentucky compare to the national rankings? According to its data, M&M’s have overtaken Reese’s as the most popular Halloween candy in 2024. Rounding out the top five are Sour Patch Kids, Skittles, and Starburst.

A peculiar trend was observed while looking at the top 10. Only six of the top 10 were chocolate-based candies, while sour and/or tangy candies made up three of the remaining four.

CandyStore.com said that, in 2023, the popularity of sour candy skyrocketed, making the face-puckering sweets a safe bet to please trick-or-treaters. That doesn’t mean shoppers can be chintzy with the chocolate this year. The delicious treats are still a staple for any Halloween candy dish.

As for Halloween candy sales, since 2011, there has been a steady increase in candy sales, including a major jump from $3.1 billion to $3.6 billion from 2022 to 2023.

In 2024, the National Retail Federation estimates around $3.5 billion to be spent on Halloween candy. Still, CandyStore.com noted that overall Halloween spending is predicted to be over $12.2 billion, which is down 5% from 2023.

However, the dip in Halloween spending could be attributed to inflation numbers cooling off and consumer confidence expressing overall economic optimism from this time last year.
