Listen to famed New York sports radio personality Mike ‘The Mad Dog’ Russo join The Dan Patrick Show to mock how 'stupid and artificial' the media inflation of Bronny James' NBA debut alongside his father LeBron was, and how American sports fan couldn't care less about a so-called 'accomplishment' that laughably bogus.
Check out the segment above as Russo is asked what he would say if his media bosses came to him offering him a radio show with his son, saying he would never give his son such an unfair advantage in such a competitive market, but also proclaiming that Colin Russo is much better on the radio than Bronny is at basketball.
Dan Patrick: “I didn’t see this but I read where you kind of dismissed the Bronny/LeBron James concocted, scripted...”
Chris ‘The Mad Dog’ Russo: “Yes, I can’t stand it. What a waste of time that is. I think that is so stupid. I think that is so artificial. C’mon, he had one rebound in three minutes and he’s gonna be in the G-League in about a week. LeBron is a wonderful player and I understand the Lakers are trying to make sure that he is motivated and galvanized, and it meant something to him – so I understand that. But I walk around town all the time and I didn’t have one person tell me ‘WOW, DID YOU SEE BRONNY PLAY WITH LEBRON LAST NIGHT??’ ... The American sports fan could care less, let’s be fair. And don’t compare it to Griffey. When Ken Griffey played with his son with Seattle he hit .306 that year. And another year he had a .380 batting average. Griffey could still hit when he was 41 years of age. Bronny is not an NBA player right now. The Lakers did this to pacify LeBron, which I understand. But don’t try to convince the American sports fan that this is a big deal that LeBron played with his kid and it’s the first ever [father/son teammates]. Because I think it’s fake.
Don’t make it historical. Don’t say ‘WOW, THIS IS THE FIRST FATHER/SON...’ Don’t make it historical. If your point is ‘Hey, listen, LeBron has earned this’, that’s fair, I’ll give you that. But don’t make this some unbelievable event that sports fans got to pay attention to because we're pacifying LeBron.”
DP: “Let’s say you say to management ‘I’d like to do a radio show with my son on SiriusXM?”
Mad Dog: “Well, I wouldn’t say that because these jobs are very difficult to get and I think that advantage for him would be unfair. Colin [Chris Russo’s son], on a radio perspective, he is better at what he does right now than what Bronny does. I’ll say that with all sorts of confidence.”
