ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (KDVR) — Acclimation. Transitional. Ramp-ups.

Call it whatever you want: The Denver Broncos took the practice field for the first time in 2024 on Wednesday morning.

Coach Payton at Broncos training camp: ‘We expect to win’

“I thought we moved around well,” noted second-year head coach Sean Payton after a brief but fast-paced workout. “We are ahead of schedule.”

In the first of two workouts before training camp officially opens on Friday, Payton had high praise for the 90 players on the field trying to crack the 2024 roster. And of course, all eyes were on the three quarterbacks — Bo Nix, Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson — trying to gain traction and seize the starting position.

For veteran head coach Payton, going through the process of a quarterback competition is new. But not something he’s losing sleep over.

“I don’t think I stress over it, but I focus on it and pay attention to it,” he said.

On the field, Stidham got the first crack working with the offense. Nix and Wilson would follow in the rotation. Payton has said not to read too closely into the reps at quarterback just yet.

“There’s a flow and an organization to how guys are going to get reps in camp and that will begin to change as we get closer to the regular season,” Payton said.

Payton gave high marks to running back Javonte Williams on Wednesday, saying: “He looks trim. I thought he looked sharp today. He looked much different. His weight’s down and I’m proud of him.”

Tight end Greg Dulcich took the field and participated fully in Tuesday’s acclimation practice. Payton said he looked good, despite wearing black ankle-high socks.

Linebacker Alex Singleton popped the question to his now fiancée Sam Amberik just before training camp kicked off a couple of days ago, saying: “Now she can celebrate that and I can focus on football.”
