DENVER ( KDVR ) — A week into the 2024-25 school year, one Highlands Ranch elementary school has already canceled class.

On Wednesday, Paula Hans with the Douglas County School District sent an email to FOX31 saying Bear Canyon Elementary School was closed due to a power outage.

Bear Canyon is in the Westridge neighborhood of Highlands Ranch and teaches students from kindergarten through sixth grade.

According to Hans, Xcel Energy notified the district that repairs to power at the school and the surrounding neighborhood would not be completed by the time the bell rang, so the school was forced to cancel.

“All activities at Bear Canyon Elementary School, including any scheduled before and after school activities, are also canceled,” said Hans.

Power was fully restored by Wednesday night, with classes to resume on Thursday.

According to Xcel’s outage map , at 8:15 a.m., 383 customers were without power. Xcel said the outage began at 2:45 a.m. Wednesday and the estimated restoration was at 11:45 a.m.

Xcel did not say what factors may have caused the outage.

Douglas County had its first day of school on Aug. 7, exactly one week ago.
