DENVER (KDVR) — A local nonprofit is stepping in to help dozens of migrants forced from their homes this week in Aurora when the city deemed their apartment building uninhabitable.

Many are in hotel rooms, but they still need food and other basic necessities.

“Right now they’re kind of lost,” said Rachel Handler, board president of All Souls Denver.

Handler is referring to the close to 30 migrants who lost their apartments after the city of Aurora deemed them unsafe to live in.

“I think it’s a crisis and we need to help,” she said.

Many have been placed in hotels around the area for a couple of weeks while they find a new place to live, and Handler wants to make sure their questions are answered.

“Are they getting food? Do they know what next steps are? Where are they going to go when their time is up in 15 days?” Handler said.

How to help migrants forced from Aurora apartments

She’s already handed out food to many of them, but All Souls needs the public’s help giving out more. They are specifically looking for donations of pre-cooked meals.

“Food that we can freeze and reheat easily. We ask that it comes in, like, a metal tin that you don’t need back. Preferably if you can bring a thing of silverware and plates, that’s super helpful,” Handler said.

They’re also looking for hygiene products.

“Anything unopened. Shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap,” Handler said.

She said each donation will go a long way in helping people get back on their feet.

“They’ve just been through so much trauma,” Handler said. “Their apartments were gated off, they had SWAT teams there.”

All Souls is located at 2852 Welton St. in Denver. Items can be donated on Mondays and Wednesdays between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Outside of those hours, Handler said donors are also welcome to leave things on their porch.

It’s funny because I could go to any country as an illegal and not have any of this -so why in the world do we keep doing this?
