Memorial at Red Rocks honors victims killed in speed-related crashes in Colorado

MORRISON, Colo. ( KDVR ) — The Colorado Department of Transportation hosted a large-scale memorial event on Monday morning to honor victims and bring awareness about speeding issues across the state.

The memorial was set up along two rows at Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre with 257 spots in total to honor the 257 people killed in speed-related crashes in 2023. Each spot had a sign with hearts and information about the victim.

“The display aims to resonate deeply with the public, reminding them that the number 257 represents real people, not just statistics,” said CDOT in a press release.

In 2023, speed was the leading factor in deadly crashes, according to CDOT.

The memorial was held from 9-11 a.m. on Monday. CDOT hopes people who came to Red Rocks saw the memorial and was reminded to slow down.

Along with the memorial, CDOT said research shows drivers who listen to fast-tempo music tend to drive faster, so, CDOT created a Spotify playlist with calm music that drivers can listen to. The playlist can be found on the streaming site, titled “No Need For Speed.”
