Cause of fire that destroyed dozens of Arvada storage units ‘undetermined’

DENVER (KDVR) — An investigation into a fire that damaged multiple units of a storage facility in Arvada on June 4 was completed, but ultimately investigators were unable to determine a cause.

The fire was reported at about 6:13 a.m. and located at the StorQuest Self Storage on Interstate 70 Frontage Road North in Arvada . Heavy smoke was filtering across I-70 and causing visibility issues .

Two firefighters were injured during the suppression effort. The fire burned so intensely on the second floor of the facility that it caused a collapsed roof and destroyed property in about 70 storage units. The facility had a total of 78 units in the building.

The agency reported that the fire nearly completely consumed the structural wood and heavily damaged electrical systems. Fire investigators with the Arvada Fire Protection District said the electrical systems were unable to be fully recovered and recreated because of the damage.

“AFPD made a thorough and comprehensive effort to determine a specific cause of the fire, consistent with the guidance of (the National Fire Prevention Association’s guide for fire and explosion investigations ),” the agency said. “AFPD ultimately determined that the evidence and data remaining, after the extensive damage, was too incomplete to reach a scientifically valid conclusion regarding a specific cause of the fire.”

The agency said it exhausted all leads that the evidence supported, and ultimately found the cause of the fire to be classified as undetermined.
