DENVER ( KDVR ) — Summer nights at a campsite usually come with a blazing campfire, but in Colorado, the summer tradition doesn’t always pair well with dry conditions and wildfire risks.

Many wildfires have ravaged Colorado this summer, making some counties increase their fire restrictions. Building a campfire, or even lighting a match, was prohibited along much of the Front Range at the beginning of August.

How many acres were burned by wildfires in Colorado?

With wet and cooler conditions moving in, many fire restrictions have lightened, allowing more places to have an open flame or even an entire campfire.

When are campfires allowed in Colorado?

Every county decides whether or not they’re under a burn ban and at what stage. If the county is under a burn ban, it restricts campfires in one way or another.

According to the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control , stage one burn bans usually prohibit outdoor campfires unless they’re in developed camping areas or in a permanent fire ring, along with other fire restrictions.

What does it mean when a county is under a burn restriction?

Meanwhile, stage two comes with even stricter fire restrictions. During a stage two fire ban, all outdoor fires, including campfires and stove fires, on private and public lands are prohibited.

Campfires are usually only allowed in Colorado when there are no burn bans, or the county is under a stage one burn ban.

Which Colorado counties are allowing campfires?

Here’s where the reported fire restrictions are in each Colorado county. These are based on reported restrictions. Be sure to double-check the county’s website for updated fire restrictions.

While fire restrictions are constantly changing in the summer, as of Aug. 22, many areas along the Front Range are under stage one fire bans.

Counties like Grand County, Douglas County and Garfield County are under a stage one ban and are restricting campfires but not completely banning them, meaning campfires are allowed in designated spots.

Other counties, like Gunnison County and Park County, don’t have fire bans at all as of Aug. 22.

Every county is a little different when it comes to what’s allowed, so be sure to check your county’s restrictions.
