9-year-old inside vehicle during theft in Highlands Ranch

DENVER (KDVR) — Law enforcement is looking for the person who took a computer and bag from inside a vehicle parked in front of Cougar Run Elementary on Tuesday while a 9-year-old was still inside the car.

The incident was reported by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, which said the incident occurred shortly before 7 a.m. outside the Highlands Ranch school. The agency said the suspect entered the parked vehicle, took the computer and bag, then got into the passenger seat of a black SUV and drove away.

The child was not harmed in the encounter.

Deputies, using school surveillance video, found the vehicle was probably a Toyota RAV4 with a sunroof. The driver appeared to be a white, heavy-set female wearing a white shirt and appeared to have a tattoo on her right forearm. The passenger was described as a white male with dark hair and a dark shirt and was wearing a mask over his nose and mouth during the theft.

The victim’s credit card was used at about 7:12 a.m. at the King Soopers at the intersection of Highlands Ranch Parkway and University Parkway. Deputies went to the area but did not find the suspects or the vehicle.
