This Colorado ski area saw snow on Wednesday night

DENVER ( KDVR ) — Colorado ski areas are preparing for the winter season, and one ski area just received the key ingredient: snow.

Arapahoe Basin , a ski area notorious for often being the first area to open and ending the season late , saw flakes on Wednesday night, with the ski area’s webcam showing snow starting at around 11 p.m. and continuing through early Thursday morning.

By sunrise, the ski area was left with a dusting. Here’s what A-Basin looked like on Thursday morning just after 7 a.m.

While Denver only had a rainstorm Wednesday, snow was spotted in other higher-elevation areas. NWS posted on X that a light dusting fell on the Rocky Mountains as well, with flakes falling at 11,000-12,000 feet MSL. Meanwhile, snow also fell on Pikes Peak, with a dusting seen on its summit camera .

While it snowed in the higher elevations on Wednesday night, September snow in the metro is unlikely this year, with Denver coming off of one of the hottest summers on record and temperatures still lingering in the 90s.

The earliest it has ever snowed in the Mile High City was on Sept. 3, 1961, but you don’t have to blow out your sprinklers and prep for winter just yet, as the average first snow of the season in Denver lands on Oct. 18.
