Man arrested in deadly road rage shooting in Denver’s Baker neighborhood

DENVER (KDVR) — Denver police arrested a 21-year-old man in connection to a homicide that was reported at about 1:47 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29 in Denver’s Baker neighborhood.

Officers discovered the shooting after stopping to check on the occupants of a vehicle that appeared to have crashed near the intersection of West Byers Place and South Kalamath Street. Officers found that the driver was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

The driver, a man, was transported to a hospital where he later died.

The Denver Police Department investigated the shooting and learned the driver had been involved in a road rage incident before the shooting. According to the agency, the victim was initially struck by gunfire while driving on South Santa Fe Drive.

The vehicle then came to a stop near South Kalamath Street and West Byers Place. Byers Place connects South Santa Fe Drive and South Kalamath Street.

Investigators spoke to witnesses and gathered video evidence, leading them to identify the suspect as Chyon Kendrick, 21. The agency said he was arrested on Wednesday and is being held for investigation of first-degree murder.

No charges have been filed. A final determination of charges will be made by the Denver District Attorney’s Office. Kendrick is scheduled to appear in court for a return filing of charges on Sept. 10. He is being held on a $750,000 cash/surety/property bond.

Kendrick is currently represented by an attorney with the Colorado State Public Defender’s Office, which does not comment on pending litigation.
