DENVER (KDVR) — A man was arrested in Brighton on accusations of animal cruelty that was discovered in late August, according to a release from the Brighton Police Department.

According to police, officers responded on Aug. 21 to an animal abuse report in an apartment in the 700 block of Mather Street. Property management had reported a foul odor coming from the unit.

Officers found that management had entered the apartment and had found at least one animal dead. Brighton police said officers were also told the man had left the animals alone in the apartment for over two weeks.

After further investigation, it was found that two adult dogs had been left in kennels that had been wired shut. A male dog was found alive and taken to the Riverside Animal Shelter for further care.

The second adult dog, a female, was found dead, “having partially delivered a litter of puppies.” The puppies were also found dead, according to Brighton police.

Police said the dogs did not have access to any food or water.

“I am extremely proud of our Animal Welfare division for their continuous dedication to seeking justice for those who do not have a voice,” Brighton Police Chief Matt Domenico said.

The man was arrested when he arrived on the scene. According to police, the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office filed one count of aggravated cruelty to animals and one count of cruelty to animals against him.

People can report animal cruelty or mistreatment to their local law enforcement agency. In Brighton, that number is 303-288-1535.
