King Soopers mass shooting jury sees ammunition shooter used on day of massacre

BOULDER, Colo. (KDVR) — An FBI agent held plastic bags filled with magazines Ahmad Alissa used on the day he killed 10 people at the King Soopers in Boulder on March 22, 2021.

Some of the sounds of police officers answering the call that day were also heard during the mass shooting trial on Wednesday. An investigator narrated clips and explained to the jury the path the shooter took as his rampage unfolded.

A former Boulder Police detective walked jurors through what police officers were doing that day when Alissa carried out the mass shooting. The investigator meticulously described which direction Alissa was headed and how he loaded his weapons.

“(He) had magazines that were fully loaded with 9mm ammunition for the handgun,” investigator Sarah Cantu said.

Cantu described other guns and ammunition as well.

Bullets go through grocery items in King Soopers shooting

An FBI forensics expert described the trajectory of the bullets fired that day. At one point the examiner described how a bullet went through a box of Rice-A-Roni and a bag of potato chips.

Forensic pathologists also testified about performing autopsies on the 10 victims.

Alissa’s defense attorney asked one of the doctors to clarify the term homicide. The attorney said a homicide can be committed by someone trying to defend themselves.

An FBI agent also told the jury about the evidence her team confiscated. It included items retrieved from Alissa’s vehicle.

“These are the six of what I am calling the larger-capacity magazines,” FBI Agent Amber Cronan said.

Cronan showed a bag filled with six magazines in a large plastic bag.

Attorneys on both sides agree that Alissa killed 10 people. He has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

The jury must decide if he was sane on the day of the shooting.
