When does Denver usually get its first freeze of the season?

DENVER ( KDVR ) – Denver has not experienced below-freezing temperatures since the start of May, but with fall just around the corner, that will likely change.

The average date for the “first freeze” of the season is Oct. 7. Given that is just an average, that doesn’t mean you have to plan to bring your potted plants in and dust off your jackets ahead of that particular Monday morning.

When has the first freeze arrived in the past?

Even though the average first freeze date for Denver is during the first week of October, it is not unheard of for it to happen much earlier or much later, such as in September or November.

The earliest the city has seen a first freeze was Sept. 8. This happened twice, in 1962 and 2020. In total, Denver has seen a first freeze in September over 40 times.

However, even though it isn’t that rare, 2020 is the only time since 2014 that Denver has seen a first freeze outside of October:

• 2020 : Sept. 8
• 2019 : Oct. 9
• 2018 : Oct. 10
• 2017 : Oct. 9
• 2016 : Oct. 6

• 2014 : Oct. 3

Denver has also only seen a first freeze in November three times in its history: Nov. 4, 1940, Nov. 6, 1924, and Nov. 15, 1944, which is the current record for the latest date.
