DENVER (KDVR) — This meteorological summer was the second hottest in the recorded history of Denver weather , but the heat beyond the summer is reaching records too.

The leaves are changing colors in Colorado’s high country. Meanwhile, Denver continues to see sunny, record-hitting heat.

Yes, it can definitely snow in Denver in September. Here’s how early

On Tuesday, Denver hit 90 degrees at 1:05 p.m., according to the National Weather Service, tying 2024 with 1994 for the fourth-most 90-degree days in a year.

On Thursday, the Mile High City hit 90 degrees around 2:30 p.m., a National Weather Service forecaster told FOX31, with a high of 93 degrees as of 5 p.m. That marks 61 days with highs in the 90s this year, earning 2024 the No. 4 spot for the most 90-degree days in a year.

Here are the years with the most 90-degree days in Denver weather history:

    1. 2020 with 75 days hitting or exceeding 90 degrees
    2. 2012 with 73 days hitting or exceeding 90 degrees
    3. 2022 with 64 days hitting or exceeding 90 degrees
    4. 2024 with 61 days hitting or exceeding 90 degrees
    5. 1994 with 60 days hitting or exceeding 90 degrees

In the coming days, FOX31 Pinpoint Weather meteorologists expect temperatures in the 80s and as high as 88 degrees on Sunday.

Denver records second hottest summer in history

On average, Denver sees its last day with temperatures in the 90s by Sept. 13, according to National Weather Service records. That being said, Denver has seen temperatures in the 90s into the second half of September in recent years.

Here are the last days for temperatures in the 90s in Denver for the last five years:

    • 2023: Sept. 30
    • 2022: Sept. 20
    • 2021: Sept. 18
    • 2020: Sept. 24
    • 2019: Sept 15

Colorado is not alone in feeling the heat — August of both 2024 and 2023 tied for the hottest on record globally. European climate service Copernicus said this summer being the hottest on record makes it more likely that 2024 will be the hottest measured in history.

When does Denver usually get its first freeze of the season?

More hot days are possible, but in true Colorado fashion, snow is also possible this month , according to NWS records.

On average, the first freeze of the year comes on Oct. 7, but it has happened as early as Sept. 8 in 2020.
