DENVER ( KDVR ) — The city of Denver is working on redeveloping the area around Ball Arena in the Auraria neighborhood.

Right now, the neighborhood has some popular attractions, like Meow Wolf and Elitch Gardens. It also holds the University of Denver’s Auraria Campus, along with many parking spaces. However, the city is looking to add to the area.

Mayor Mike Johnston submits $1.76B proposed city budget

Throughout this week, the city said redevelopment plans are in progress.

On Friday, the City of Denver said the city council recieved development plans which proposed rezoning in the Ball Arena area , allowing the construction of 6,000 housing units with 1,000 being affordable housing, a park and a recreation center.

The council also received plans to buy the building at 570 W. 44th Avenue for $26 million, which would be used to support inmate re-entry. This purchase would be in an effort of the council’s decision to move away from private corrections providers, according to the city.

Plans are underway for reconstruction, but there’s still a lot of work to do. The city said that next week, the council members and mayor will hear the budget proposals from city agencies, then they will revise the budget in the following weeks and potentially approve the vote in October.

These are some of the many plans around the area. In 2022, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment proposed essentially building a new neighborhood around Ball Arena with open space, office space, retail and housing.
