DENVER ( KDVR ) — Denver had its second hottest summer on record and the Mile High City had some of the most 90-degree days in history this year. However, according to Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Travis Michels, those hot days are likely over for the year.

So far, Denver has recorded 62 days over 90 degrees, with six days over 100 degrees, according to the National Weather Service . Heading into September, those hot temperatures stuck around for a few weeks.

In mid-September, temperatures reached the 90s, however, that’s likely the hottest it will be for the rest of the year, according to Michels.

    A cooldown is coming

Michels believes this past weekend was the last of the 90 degrees for the season.

Usually, Denver sees 90s at the start of September, but those chances dwindle quickly with the average highs dipping to the middle 70s by the end of the month.

Michels said that after mid-September is when the cooldown arrives in the metro, with temperatures dropping to around the 70s and 80s. Based on the upcoming forecast, that cooldown is on its way.

Tuesday has a high of 87 degrees, but Michels said storms should keep temperatures from hitting 90 degrees. After Tuesday, the cooling trend should mark the end of the 90 degrees in Denver for the season.

In Denver history, the latest 90-degree day was on Oct. 1, according to NWS, but Michels said that having 90 degrees that late in the fall season isn’t common. The record for the latest 90-degree day in October was set in 1892.

While Denver is likely done with the 90-degree heat, Michels said that Denver should expect to get back to 80 degrees toward midweek next week.
