BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. ( KDVR ) — Parents were out on Baseline Road just west of 95th Street Monday morning volunteering to help kids cross two busy crosswalks on the four-lane road.

The parent volunteers helped watch the crosswalks at King Street and Roser Drive. According to the city of Lafayette, two different students were hit at the signaled crosswalks on Baseline Road.

2 students hit within 24 hours

The first student was hit on Sept. 5 while crossing Baseline Road at King Street. According to the group IP Crosswalk Action, the student was a middle schooler from Nevin Platt Middle. That student was returning home from school.

Then, the next day, according to the city, another student was hit on Baseline Road at Roser Drive. According to the parent volunteer group, that kid was riding a bike and heading to Centaurus High School.

During the second crash, the driver left the scene, but the car was later found. Both situations are still under investigation.

The city didn’t release the injury status of the two students who were hit.

Parents step up to protect crosswalks

On Monday, FOX31 was at the crossings and witnessed parent volunteers working the crosswalk during the busy hours.

FOX31’s Courtney Fromm spoke to Jennie Fletemeyer, a mom of three who lives near Baseline Road.

She was wearing a vest and carrying a large flag and helped everyone who needed to cross get across safely. She pointed out flags in buckets on the sides of the crosswalk that represent the “Take it to Make it” action plan. They are encouraging people who cross to carry one of the flags so cars can see.

During the few hours Fromm was at the intersection, she said she witnessed about a dozen cars get pulled over by a Lafayette police officer working in the area.

“They are no longer giving out warnings,” Fletemeyer said. “The warning was those two students being hit, people need to pay attention and slow down.”

The group is encouraging all concerned citizens of Lafayette to join them at the city council meeting on Tuesday night, Sept. 17th at 5:30 p.m. to have their voices heard.

“We are looking to work with the city for a long-term solution that will help keep all pedestrians and cyclists safe,” Kristin with IP Crosswalk Action wrote in an email to Fromm. “What is out there now just does not work!”
