DENVER ( KDVR ) — Rats and mice are quite common in cities, and Denver is no exception. According to a nationwide pest control company, the Mile High City was one of the most “rodent-infested cities” in the country last year.

Rodents are common in cities because of the access to food and sanitation practices, according to Terminix , a nationwide termination service. While small, they quickly become a problem as they can create public health concerns and cause significant property damage.

Because of this damage, Terminix looked into which of its 300 branches dispatched the most rodent control services in 2023.

Among the list of the 50 top cities that needed the most services in the designated service areas, Denver ranked as one of the cities that used the rodent control services most frequently in 2023.

Here are the top 15 cities that needed the most rodent services:

    1. New York City
    2. San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, California
    3. Los Angeles
    4. Philadelphia
    5. Washington DC
    6. Chicago
    7. Houston
    8. Boston
    9. Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas
    10. Atlanta
    11. Baltimore
    12. Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto, California
    13. Denver
    14. Hartford-New Haven, Connecticut
    15. Cleveland-Akron, Ohio

Rats and mice are hard to avoid in cities, as most rodent populations are attracted to high population densities with easy-to-access food and mild climates, according to the pest control company.

Terminix said the best ways to keep rats and mice out of your home is to seal off possible entry points like cracks and openings around doors, store food in airtight containers, clean food residue from your living space, throw out your garbage in tightly sealed bins and organize clutter to avoid nesting sites.
