DENVER ( KDVR ) — The November general election is coming up, and Denver residents are already decorating their front yards with political signs. While these political signs are legal in the city, there are rules around what and where residents can put them.

Is it illegal in Colorado to remove a campaign sign from someone’s yard?

If you plan to represent a political party on your Denver property, follow the Denver Zoning Code Section 10.10.3.

Where can you put up a campaign sign?

When putting up a campaign sign, or really any sign in Denver, you need to follow the zoning code, which states that any sign must be on private property. The city of Denver also said that signs can’t be in the public right-of-way.

    Public rights of way include:

    • Tree lawns
    • Median strips
    • Highway entrance and exit ramps
    • Traffic signs and posts
    • Utility poles

It also states that the sign must follow zoning regulations. Political signs can be shown on residential property without a permit, but there are only specific places and types of signs you can put up.

When are ballots mailed out in Colorado?

These are the types of signs allowed:

    • Wall signs
    • Window signs
    • Ground signs no more than 6 feet above grade unless mounted to a single pole no taller than 25 feet
    • Signs must be maintained in a clean, orderly and sightly condition
    • Signs can’t be animated, flash, blink or fluctuate
    • Signs can’t be illuminated
    • No sign larger than 15 square feet in size

As long as it’s on your private property and following the zoning code, you’re allowed to have a political sign in Denver.
