DENVER ( KDVR ) — A Mountain View town council member who allegedly shot a teen in the face was formally charged on Tuesday.

First Judicial District Attorney Alexis King announced that 38-year-old Brent Metz was formally charged with second-degree assault, menacing and illegal discharge of a firearm. Metz has been a Mountain View council member since at least 2021.

The charges stem from an incident on Sept. 10. On that day, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to a home on Pleasant Park Road in Conifer after a female homeowner called to report two trespassers. The homeowner also called her boyfriend, Metz, about the trespassers.

When deputies arrived at the home, they found a 17-year-old bleeding heavily from his face and a bullet hole in the windshield of the teen’s vehicle. Another 17-year-old was also in the car at the time of the shooting.

The teens told deputies that they went to the property to ask the homeowners if they could take homecoming photos near the lake that sits on their property. When no one answered the door, the teen said they returned to their car off-property and began writing a note to ask the homeowners for permission.

According to deputies, while the teens were writing the note, Metz drove up to the passenger side of the teen’s vehicle and parked in a way that blocked their car in. Metz then got out and allegedly fired a shot that went through the windshield and hit one of the teens in the face.

One of the victims said Metz exclaimed, “My gun went off,” and Metz then attempted to render aid.

Because of this information, the DA’s office filed formal charges.

The sheriff’s office said the teen sustained serious injuries. Neither teen will face trespassing charges, because the sheriff’s office said there “appeared to be no malicious intent to commit a crime” by the teens.
