Sept. 19 update : After the interview Thursday, family members posted on GoFundMe that Isabella had died.

“God, thank you for lending me a little piece of heaven. Yesterday (September 18th) she returned to you, and I know that you will let us see her again,” the page states.

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (KDVR) — A Commerce City family is hoping for a miracle as doctors at the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora are trying to save the life of their 18-year-old daughter.

She’s in critical condition after she was struck by a truck crossing the street in Commerce City .

Police say the 15-year-old behind the wheel of the pick-up truck is charged with driving without a license and hit-and-run, although he did eventually come back to the scene. They say because he returned, the district attorney might not pursue the hit-and-run charge.

Leonel and Ana Morales-Hernandez took a break from their daughter’s bedside in the ICU to tell FOX31 her story.

“Devastating,” said Leonel. “Definitely it’s one of the terrible feelings you have in your life.”

Nearly a week ago on Friday, Sept. 13, their daughter Isabella was walking across the street from her home heading to church when tragedy struck.

“There was a kid, 13 to 15 years old, with a pickup. A big pickup. I guess he got scared and he hit and run,” said Ana.

Isabella’s parents could look out the window and see the sea of police lights. That’s when they went outside to see what was going on.

“When I walked over there was my daughter on the floor,” said Ana. “When I see her body, it’s just incredible, the moment.”

Two witnesses saw the crash that happened in the 5100 block of East 64th Avenue in Commerce City and called 911. That gave Isabella a chance to make it to the hospital to fight for her life.

“Sadly, she has really bad injuries,” Ana said. “Head, body, broken legs, broken ribs, broken arms.”

Although Isabella’s family is dealing with the pain of seeing their daughter in a coma in the ICU, they say they are not angry with the 15-year-old driver.

“I don’t want to be on the other side with the family of the little one. It’s a boy,” said Ana. “I don’t feel angry. I just feel sad. Sad for the boy, sad for my daughter.”

The parents now pushing for safety on the roads so no other family has to deal with this pain.

“It’s a really bad tradition for some people when their kids turn 15 years old they give them a new car. That’s how they celebrate la quinceanera. That’s super irresponsible,” said Ana. “They never know how the future of their kids can stop at any moment. Their kids can end someone else’s life.”

They are using their faith and holding out hope that their baby girl will come home.

“We believe for sure God is going to help us in this moment,” said Ana.

Isabella’s parents say they heard the 15-year-old say he left the scene of the crash originally because he was scared. While the family’s future is uncertain, the road ahead will be difficult. There is a GoFundMe to help support them during this time.
