DENVER ( KDVR ) — A change is in the air, and just in time for astronomical fall.

Colorado will go from warm and sunny with temperatures nearing 90 degrees on Friday to chances for rain and snow over the weekend.

Denver weather: Snow, rain coming Saturday

The Pinpoint Weather team is tracking rain in the metro, but some areas of Colorado could get its first taste of winter. So, if you have plans to go leaf-peeping for the first peak weekend , be sure to dress warm.

    Who could see snow?

If you aren’t prepared for snow in the metro, don’t worry, you still have time. However, the high country is expected to get some flurries this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service , snow is expected to fall in the high country on Saturday. NWS said the snowstorm could be moderate to heavy at times.

According to Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Greg Perez, the following areas are expected to see snow:

    • 0-2 inches of snow
      • Estes Park
      • Red Feather Lakes
      • Eldora
      • Loveland Ski Area
      • Breckenridge
    • 2-4 inches of snow
      • Fairplay
      • Leadville
      • Crested Butte
      • San Juan River Valley
    • 4-8 inches of snow
      • San Juan Mountain Range

Perez said Rocky Mountain National Park could get 6-10 inches of snow, and areas above 11,000 feet in the Sawatch Range could get up to 10 inches of snow.

The National Weather Service said Saturday that elevations above 9,000 feet could get 3-8 inches of snow through Sunday afternoon, and a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect starting at 6 p.m.

While that sounds like a lot of snow for the high country in mid-September, Perez highlighted that most of the snow won’t stick. It will be very slushy in areas between 7,000-8,000 feet because the high country has been so warm this week. There may also be a mix of snow and rain, which will decrease snow totals.

Perez said there may not be any snow by the time Sunday rolls around due to melting.

    What about the metro?

While the high country will get a taste of winter, the metro and Front Range are jumping right into fall.

On Saturday, temperatures will drop around 17 degrees into the high-60s to low-70s. The Pinpoint Weather team said Saturday will be cloudy, and by the afternoon, widespread rain will move in.

    • Boulder
    • Breckenridge
    • Castle Rock
    • Denver
    • Estes Park
    • Evergreen
    • Fort Collins
    • Fort Morgan
    • Greeley
    • Kremmling
    • Limon
    • Longmont

Most areas, according to the NWS, will get .25 inches to .75 inches of rain. The heaviest rain will be south of Denver, and lighter rain near the Wyoming state line, NWS said.

The rain and a chance for thunderstorms will continue through Saturday night and into Sunday morning — the first day of fall. By Sunday afternoon and evening, the storms will clear, leaving behind temperatures in the high-50s.
