Will Denver skip over fall and go straight from summer to winter?

DENVER ( KDVR ) — Denver has been unexpectedly hot this season, but even with the warm weather, the Mile High City won’t miss out on the fall temperatures. But, you might have to wait awhile.

Usually, Denver starts to feel like fall around the end of September and into the start of October, according to Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Travis Michels . During this time, temperatures tend to dip into the 60s and 70s and stay around that before cooling down for the winter.

However, this fall season started unusually warm.

This year was the hottest September in history , with an average temperature of 70 degrees — about 5 degrees warmer than the typical September in Denver. Not only was the average temperature warmer than usual, but the city also saw multiple 90-degree days throughout the month, and as of October, it isn’t cooling down just yet.

Tuesday morning had the coldest temperature in over 100 days

On Wednesday, temperatures reached a high of 89 degrees , overtaking a heat record that held for almost two decades.

While fall technically began in September and will last through November, this warm weather doesn’t mean Denver will skip over the fall season, according to Michels.

Denver won’t miss out on the fall weather

Even though the warm temperatures are lasting longer than usual, Michels said Denver won’t miss the fall weather, it will just be a little later in the season.

“We’ll stay warm through the start of the winter, so instead of dropping fast into winter temperatures, we’ll keep dropping and it should feel more like fall than early winter,” said Michels.

Instead of the weather turning from summer to winter, there will be a gradual decline where temperatures will stay in the 60s and 70s. Michels said temperatures should finally dip during the second half of October.

Along with the above-average fall heat, Michels said the temperature outlook keeps Denver above average for the rest of the year and early into next year. Michels said this is a trend he’s seen over the past century where seasons are getting pushed back about a month.
