DENVER (KDVR) – The City and County of Denver will redevelop a park in the city’s La Alma-Lincoln Park neighborhood with the help of an $8.4 million grant from the federal government.

The grant, which is through the Department of the Interior’s Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership Grants Program, was awarded to a redevelopment project in the Historic Cultural District in September.

The neighborhood of La Alma – Lincoln Park is located just south of Auraria, which is the oldest neighborhood in Denver and was the core part of the city when it was founded in the 1800s.

According to the City and County of Denver, the area played a significant role in the state’s Chicano movement.

The actual park being updated is 15.4 acres and is located between Osage and Mariposa streets and between West 13th and West 11th avenues.

A release from the city said the development of the park includes things like a new exercise and cultural story loop, new roller skate loop and plaza, a picnic grove and a pollinator garden.

There will also be an expansion of the existing skate park and playground and improvements to sports courts and fields. The amphitheater in the park will also be restored.

All of the improvements to the park are included in a vision plan that was completed in 2023 .

Goron Robertson, the Denver Parks and Recreation Director of Park Planning, Design and Construction, said the grant is exciting for the neighborhood community.

“The vision plan, developed through extensive neighborhood engagement, will revitalize this historic park as a vibrant gathering place that honors its rich cultural heritage while providing new amenities for residents of all ages,” he said.

Gold Strike Park in Arvada also received $7.3 million in funding from the grant. The park is located off of West 56th Avenue and Ralston Road.

Development of the park will include adding things like a nature playground, water-play area, pavilion and a picnic area.
