DENVER ( KDVR ) — A tattoo and piercing shop, Sol Tribe Tattoo and Piercing, which was the victim of a shooting spree in December 2021 has had a group of former employees open new shops following its closure.

The announcement comes nearly two months after Sol Tribes’ closure. The shop remained open for nearly three years after being one of the locations of the shooting incident.

Three people were shot in the shop , two were killed and the third survived. One of those killed was Alicia Cardenas, the founder and owner of Sol Tribe. She was a prominent figure in the tattoo, piercing and art community in Denver and beyond. The other victim killed in the shooting at Sol Tribe was Alyssa Gunn-Maldonado , who was shot alongside her husband Jimmy Maldonado. Jimmy was taken to the hospital and placed in the intensive care unit where he survived his injuries.

Following the incident, Sol Tribe closed temporarily and reopened several weeks later. The community rallied behind the shop with several neighboring businesses closing temporarily to mourn the incident and others sending their best wishes and condolences. Community gatherings were held to mourn the victims and support the rest of the Sol Tribe family and the other lives lost in the shooting.

After the permanent closure of Sol Tribe about two months ago, several members of that Sol Tribe family are set to continue the legacy of the shop.

Opening under the name, Cold Moon Piercing and Tattoo , one of the new shops was founded by Casey Hosch who was an apprentice and friend of Cardenas. The shop will be operated by a group of members who worked together at Sol Tribe.

Another shop was also opened by Jimmy Maldonado, Wolf and Goat Piercing . Jimmy was a long-time friend of Cardenas and has been piercing for over 25 years.

Both of these new shops will continue to provide a safe and welcoming place for those looking to modify their bodies.
