PARK COUNTY, Colo. (KXRM) — Crews were able to recover the body of a woman from the Pike National Forest near the Park and Teller County line two days after she was killed in an ATV crash, according to the Park County Coroner’s Office.

The Coroner’s Office said its office and numerous other agencies responded on Wednesday, Oct. 2 to a report of a missing person and a fatal ATV crash in the National Forest near the county line.

The coroner’s office, Park County Sheriff’s Office, Park County Search and Rescue, and the Lake George Fire Protection District navigated “extremely rough terrain” to find the crash site, where they found 60-year-old Shelley Maree Ekstrom, of Conifer, dead from injuries sustained in an ATV crash.

Through its investigation, the Coroner determined that Ekstrom died late on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Her body was found and recovered on Oct. 3 after crews had to navigate rivers and use rope to climb over steep terrain.

“This marks the second ATV fatality in the past two months,” the sheriff’s office said. “We urge everyone to wear appropriate safety gear, reduce speed, and ensure familiarity with both your vehicle and the trails before riding.”
