DENVER (KDVR) — Two Colorado police officers have been charged with theft and are accused of using city resources to operate a private K-9 training business while on duty.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation said in a release Friday that Chief Aaron Fresquez and his twin brother Sgt. Adam Fresquez, both sworn officers of the Center Colorado Police Department, were issued summons for theft after a year-long investigation.

Additionally, Chief Fresquez was cited for a misdemeanor count of official misconduct.

The 35-year-old brothers allegedly trained K-9 dogs for other police agencies, pocketing the proceeds that CBI said should have gone to the Town of Center.

“The Town of Center has placed the brothers on administrative leave. In the meantime, the city has appointed Lieutenant Eidy Guaderama to the position of Intern Chief,” CBI said.

The 12th Judicial District Attorney requested that the CBI investigate, and requested the 6th Judicial District Attorney’s Office to act as special prosecutors to avoid conflict of interest, CBI said.

The officers were given summonses to appear in the 12th Judicial District Courthouse at a later date. CBI said the investigation is ongoing.
