DENVER (KDVR) – Three occupants of a home that caught fire early Sunday morning in Centennial were evacuated safely, and the cause was found to be an unattended fire pit outside , according to South Metro Fire Rescue.

The fire happened in the 6100 block of South Kirk Street.

The fire was first reported at 2:10 a.m., according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office.

All three people in the house were safely evacuated and were being assisted by the American Red Cross of Colorado. No injuries were reported, but two cats were still unaccounted for as of 4 a.m.

The first floor and second floor of the home were compromised due to the extensive fire.

Investigators with the Fire Marshall’s office said the fire originated outside on the wood deck from an unattended fire pit that hadn’t been completely extinguished.

SMFR took the chance to remind people of the county’s Stage 1 fire restrictions, which prohibit “igniting, building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire, including charcoal grills and fire pits,” the agency said.
