DENVER ( KDVR ) — A man is dead following a shooting involving police officers in Castle Rock on Wednesday night.

FOX31 received several tips from viewers about shots being fired outside an apartment complex Wednesday night. After reaching out, the Castle Rock Police Department said officers were called to the intersection of Bilberry Street and Meadows Boulevard at 10:30 p.m. The area is in The Meadows community.

Castle Rock police shared little information on what led up to the shooting but said that no officers were injured and an adult suspect was pronounced dead. However, the agency provided an update on Thursday.

The agency said the 911 call Castle Rock police received was about a disturbance with a neighbor, where a male subject armed with a stick had grabbed the caller’s phone and broke it. The suspect then left the scene and was reported to be possibly armed with a shotgun.

Officers who responded said they observed the man with a shotgun in his hand. He was seen breaking into the leasing office of a nearby apartment community, where he barricaded himself inside. Officers said they heard at least one shot fired from inside.

Minutes after that, the subject exited the building with a handgun and fired at officers. They returned fire, hitting the subject. The officers provided medical aid after the exchange of gunshots. It is unclear how many officers fired shots or how many shots struck the subject.

The subject was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officers involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is reviewed by the 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team.

Holden Warfield was trying to leave his dad’s apartment when he found himself blocked in the parking lot by the complex’s clubhouse Wednesday night.

“I could hear someone inside yelling and smashing stuff around, just screaming, police yelling at him to put his hands up so I started recording,” Warfield told FOX31’s Nicole Fierro. “They were yelling for a bit then it was pretty much silent. And then all of a sudden you hear one shot and then you just hear a bunch of shots. You know, you see all the stories up in Denver, Aurora, but never really in Castle Rock.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who can provide investigators with more information should call the Castle Rock police’s tipline at 720-733-3517 or CrimeTips@CRgov.com .
