DENVER ( KDVR ) — Halloween season, spooky season, “spoopy” season, it ween! However it is described, Halloween is right around the corner. One great pastime of the season is to try and get scared silly.

One great way to achieve this feeling is to cozy up, enjoy the fall weather and put on a scary movie that will pump your adrenaline into motion and have a vice grip on your imagination as you try to fall asleep that night.

First snow of 2024 expected to be one of the latest in Denver’s history

Coloradans are seeking that thrill, and a survey by NoDepositRewards revealed which scary movies they are searching for.

The researchers used Google Keyword Planner to gather data on the most searched Halloween movies based on the search phrases:

    • [movie]
    • Watch [movie] online
    • Where can I watch [movie]?
    • How to watch [movie]?
    • Stream [movie]
    • How to stream [movie]?

The combined number of searches from these phrases in correlation to a movie was then used to rank the movies from the highest number mentioned to the lowest number mentioned. The total amount of searches was also syndicated and compared to other states’ search history for Halloween movies.

After all the data was gathered, it was found that Colorado had the third-highest ranking in monthly searches. Colorado generated 7,364 related monthly searches per 100,000 people.

The top five movies also revealed that while some viewers enjoy the thrill of scary movies, others prefer lighter comedy-based scary movies steeped in Halloween lore.

    Top 5 searched movies

Beetlejuice” – 34,245 monthly searches: Tim Burton’s 1988 movie, “Beetlejuice” topped the list of the most searched Halloween movies. The recent release of the sequel “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” has likely spurred a movement to watch the original movie.

Talk to Me” – 16,822 monthly searches : This one is for the thrill seekers out there. Aussie YouTubers, Michael and Danny Philippou broke out of the YouTube scene and into the film industry to release this horror film in 2022 to critical and commercial success.

“Alien” – 15,788 monthly searches: This 1979 cult classic by Ridley Scott is the oldest movie on the list. Alien delivered famous horror characters like Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley, and the iconic insect-like alien, the Xenomorph.

Things to do near Denver this weekend: Oct. 11-13

“Coraline” – 15,026 monthly searches: This stop motion, claymation film is a dark fantasy that can be watched by children and adults alike. It was only unable to make the top five searched movies in three states, Ohio, South Dakota and Wyoming.

“Scary Movie” – 13,647 monthly searches : The ironically named comedy that was released in 2000 became a hit that resulted in four sequels. Seeing some of the scariest movie characters parodied into something less terrifying struck a nerve with Halloween movie enthusiasts.

Based on the survey, Colorado showed it is one of the states most interested in Halloween movies. Coloradans are embracing the new era of Halloween films alongside the old with the top five movies spanning across six decades.
