Tanks of bugs, ‘Creepy Cuisine’: What Elitch Garden’s coffin challenge entailed

DENVER ( KDVR ) — Five participants competed in Elitch Garden’s “ Pine Box Challenge ” on Saturday, which includes spending 24 hours in a coffin to win season passes, among other prizes. In theory, 24 hours in a box may not sound too bad, but that’s not the only challenge.
The guests made themselves comfortable in the coffins, bringing sheets and pillows. The coffins even had the head piece cut out so the participants could see. However, when the participants were in their coffins, they were constantly bugged by evil clowns, ghouls and goblins who buried them alive with mulch, made constant noise and flashed bright lights.
And that was just part of the challenge.
Elitch Gardens said the contestants also had to go on pitch black haunted house walks and back to back rides on the Brain Drain as well as nighttime rides on XLR8R, Twister III and Boomerang. Meanwhile, other parts were downright gross.
The amusement park said they underwent two rounds of “Creepy Cuisine” like eating cod liver, duck eggs and miscellaneous foods. At one point, they also had to stick their hands in tanks full of crickets, meal worms, fish and cockroaches.
All five contestants made it through, and for all that, they received “a coffin full of treats” including two season passes for 2025, two premium dining passes for 2025, two passes for the 2024 Fright Fest and “eternal bragging rights.”
