1 killed in shooting at Adams County park

DENVER ( KDVR ) — One person is dead and another injured after a shooting at a park in Adams County.

According to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, the first 911 calls for the shooting were received around 11:18 p.m. Saturday.

The shooting occurred at Rotella Park, 1824 Coronado Parkway, in the unincorporated community of Welby. This is the area north of Interstate 76, south of Thornton and between Interstate 25 and the South Platte River.

Initially, deputies said one person, a juvenile male, was killed and another person, an adult male, had a gunshot wound to the leg. On Monday, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office said the incident involved all juveniles.

Neighbors told FOX31 that the park is typically peaceful and quiet.

“I hate the fact that it happened here, but you never know where it’s going to happen next,” neighbor Ron Foster told FOX31’s Kasia Kerridge. “For the most part, it’s a very nice park. I love coming over here, I walk here five days a week.”

As of 3 a.m., the Adams County sheriff tweeted that interviews with witnesses and family members were ongoing. The agency updated FOX31 Sunday evening that witnesses and involved parties that they’ve interviewed have not been forthright with information. Deputies are reviewing digital evidence and other types of investigations to assist with solving this case.

“We saw all of the police tape and were like oh, something happened and as we drove by, that’s when we saw that there had to be a shooting or something,” said neighbor Shelby Kogovsek to Kerridge. “Nothing like that ever happens over here.”
